Did Ravana Really Never Touch Sita? The Truth According to the Ramayana

Did Ravana Really Never Touch Sita? The Truth According to the Ramayana

“Ravana kidnapped Sita, but he never touched her.” This statement is frequently repeated in discussions about the Ramayana. Some people believe Ravana could not touch Sita because of a curse, while others say the woman taken to Lanka was not the real Sita at all.

But what do the original texts actually say?

1. What Does Valmiki Ramayana Say?

The Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda, Sarga 49, Shloka 17, describes Ravana physically seizing Sita during her abduction. The Sanskrit verse says he caught her by her hair with one hand and her thighs with the other before carrying her away.

Therefore, the claim that Ravana never physically touched Sita is not consistent with this passage.Ravana took Sita away by force, but that's not the same as saying he hurt her in a sexual way. The story talks about how Ravana wanted Sita for himself, but it doesn't say he touched her in a bad way while she was in Lanka.

2. Then Why Didn't Ravana Force Sita?

In old stories about the Ramayana, there's a story that explains what happened. It says that Ravana was cursed by Nalakubara after something went wrong with a woman named Rambha from the heavens. This curse is said to have happened because of an incident involving Rambha, and it's still talked about in traditional commentaries on the Ramayana.

Ravana was warned about a curse that said if he ever forced himself on a woman who didn't want him, his head would literally shatter. That's why, when it came to Sita, he tried to scare her into marrying him instead of just taking her by force. He wanted to avoid the curse, so he attempted to persuade her, even though she clearly didn't want to be with him. This shows that Ravana was actually pretty afraid of the curse, and it stopped him from doing something that would have had serious consequences.

This story is often told as part of the usual story, but it's not something that can be proven to have actually happened.

3. Was the woman in Lanka really Sita, or was she an illusion created by Maya?

Another important explanation comes from later Ramayana traditions. In texts such as the Kurma Purana and Adhyatma Ramayana, the story of Maya Sita appears. In these versions, Agni or divine power protects the real Sita, while an illusory form is taken away by Ravana.

When Sita goes through the Agni Pariksha, the real her is finally back and the fake version of her is gone. But the details of what happens can be different depending on which story you read.

This is a genuine difference between Ramayana traditions. The Maya Sita explanation should not be presented as though it appears in exactly the same form in every version of the epic.

So, What Is the Truth?

It really depends on what specific aspect of the claim we're looking at.

Why Did Ravana Not Force Himself on Sita? The Curse of Nalakubara

In the Valmiki Ramayana, there's a story about Ravana getting a curse from Nalakubara, who was Kubera's son. This story is found in the Uttara Kanda, specifically in Sarga 26. It's an interesting part of the legend, and it gives us a glimpse into Ravana's past. The curse had a big impact on his life, and it's still talked about today.

Rambha, a woman from the heavens, was related to Nalakubara. One day, Ravana made a move on her, even though she said no. When Nalakubara found out what Ravana had done, he put a curse on him. He said that if Ravana ever touched a woman without her consent again, his head would break into seven pieces. This curse would be a big problem for Ravana later on. Ravana didn't seem to care about what Nalakubara said, but the curse was still out there, waiting to happen.

In the traditional story, this curse is seen as the reason why Ravana never forced himself on Sita while she was being held captive in Lanka. Instead, he tried to win her over with words and threats, but Sita refused to give in to his demands, always rejecting him..
