5 Cities from the Mahabharata Era That Still Exist in India Today

From the land associated with the Bhagavad Gita to ancient cities linked to the Pandavas, the stories of one of India’s most renowned epics remain alive in many cities across the country today.

These places are more than just sites of worship; they encompass ancient ruins, historic settlements, and traditions that have endured for centuries. However, when it comes to their connection to the events of the Mahabharata, the accounts found in history books do not always align.

Here are five such places that bridge modern-day India with the world of the Mahabharata.

1. Kurukshetra, Haryana: The Land of the Bhagavad Gita

Kurukshetra holds immense significance in Indian history. It was here that the great war of the Mahabharata took place. During this conflict, Lord Krishna imparted the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Arjuna was going through a deeply difficult phase, as he had to fight against his own kin; in this moment of crisis, Krishna showed him the right path. This narrative remains widely known, and Kurukshetra is remembered as the very site where these events unfolded.

Today, Kurukshetra is a major pilgrimage destination in Haryana, drawing large numbers of visitors. It is home to several notable landmarks, such as the ancient 'Brahma Sarovar' lake and the 'Shri Krishna Museum,' which houses a fascinating collection of artifacts related to the life of Lord Krishna. There is also a specific site known as 'Jyotisar,' believed to be the place where the dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna took place—a deeply cherished account.

2. Hastinapur, Uttar Pradesh: The Kingdom of the Kauravas

Hastinapur played a pivotal role in the Mahabharata; it served as the principal city of the Kuru Kingdom and was the residence of the Kauravas. The city stood at the heart of a power struggle that ultimately culminated in a devastating war. The history of Hastinapur is inextricably linked to the events of that era, making it an essential part of the Mahabharata narrative. Hastinapur, located near Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, possesses a very rich history. Excavations at this site have revealed evidence of an ancient settlement. Earthenware discovered here belongs to the 'Painted Grey Ware' culture a significant find that sheds light on the past of this region.

3. Mathura, Uttar Pradesh: The City Associated with the Birth of Lord Krishna

For those who revere Lord Krishna, Mathura is a place of immense significance. According to Hindu tradition, this is where he was born. Numerous tales ranging from his childhood to his battles against King Kamsa are linked to this city, making it an integral part of the Krishna narrative. Consequently, Mathura has become a major hub for devotees of Krishna.

Mathura is not merely a city of legends; it also possesses a documented history. For a long period, it served as a prominent center in India, playing a substantial role in the nation's politics, trade, and culture. While some places are known solely through folklore, Mathura’s past is recorded in writing, highlighting its significant contribution to the development and progress of ancient India.

Mathura’s history is remarkably rich, evidenced by its ancient structures and inscriptions. However, the accounts concerning the life of Lord Krishna remain a matter of faith and belief.

4. Dwarka, Gujarat: The Legendary City of Krishna

According to Hindu tradition, after leaving Mathura, Lord Krishna established his kingdom in Dwarka. Ancient accounts describe a magnificent city that was eventually submerged by the sea—a city believed to have been truly extraordinary.

Situated on the coast of Gujarat, Dwarka is a major destination for pilgrims. Nearby, researchers are actively working to uncover and understand its past. Explorations have also been conducted beneath the sea, where some intriguing discoveries—ancient remains and structures have captured widespread attention.

It is crucial to note an important distinction here: the discovery of ancient remains underwater does not definitively prove that they belong to the legendary city of Krishna. Whether the present-day city of Dwarka is the same as the one described in the *Mahabharata* remains a subject of debate.

5. Delhi: Is this the site of ancient Indraprastha?

The city of Indraprastha, mentioned in the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata ,is deeply associated with the Pandavas. For a long time, historians and researchers have sought to determine its actual location. Some believe it may have been situated in the vicinity of present-day Delhi—specifically in the area now known as the 'Purana Qila' . This has been a point of great interest for many who are keen to uncover the truth about this ancient city.

Excavations at the Purana Qila have yielded evidence suggesting that the site was inhabited at various points in the past. The discovery of ancient potteryi dentified as belonging to the 'Painted Grey Ware' culture has led some experts to speculate that it could be linked to the era of the *Mahabharata*, an ancient narrative of great significance.

Why do these ancient tales still matter today?

The Mahabharata continues to exert a profound influence on India’s literature, art, and culture. Many people—including pilgrims, travelers, and researchers Visit the locations mentioned in the epic, attempting to bridge the gap between these age-old stories and the contemporary world.
