Skin Feeling Dry and Dull in October? 7 Simple Ways to Update Your Skincare Routine

October brings changing weather, festive celebrations and the beginning of the transition towards winter in many parts of North India. But along with the change in temperature, some people notice that their skin feels tight after washing, their lips become dry, or their makeup starts looking patchy.

The solution is not necessarily to buy expensive skincare products. Sometimes, a few simple changes to your daily routine can help your skin stay comfortable and hydrated.

1. Switch to a Gentle Face Cleanser

If your skin feels tight or uncomfortable after you wash your face, it might be because your cleanser is too rough for your skin. Doctors who specialize in skin, called dermatologists, say you should use a gentle cleanser that doesn't scratch your skin. This is better than scrubbing your face really hard, which can make things worse. A gentle cleanser will clean your face without making it feel tight or uncomfortable. To keep your skin clean, start by washing your face with lukewarm water. Then, gently pat it dry with a clean towel - don't rub too hard. It's also important not to over-wash your face throughout the day, unless you've been sweating a lot. This can help prevent irritation and keep your skin healthy.

2. Choose a Moisturiser According to Your Skin Type

A moisturiser helps retain moisture and supports the skin's natural protective barrier. However, not everyone needs the same type of product.

If you have oily skin, you might want to use a moisturizer that's light and won't clog your pores. On the other hand, if your skin is dry, a richer cream might be more suitable. And if your skin is sensitive, it's a good idea to choose a moisturizer that doesn't have any fragrances added to it, as these can sometimes irritate the skin.Applying moisturiser while your skin is slightly damp can also help retain moisture.

3. Do Not Stop Using Sunscreen

One common skincare mistake is assuming sunscreen is unnecessary when the weather becomes cooler or cloudy.

Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial all year round. To do this, you should use a sunscreen that guards against a broad spectrum of rays and can withstand water, with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30, as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology, especially when you're outside.Use it as the instructions say on the label and put more on when you need to, like after you sweat a lot or are outside for a long time.

4. Avoid Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Using lots of skincare products at the same time can be bad for your skin. Things like scrubs and exfoliating acids can be helpful for some skin problems, but too much of a good thing can cause irritation. It's better to use them one at a time to see how your skin reacts. If your face feels unusually dry, red or sensitive, simplify your routine instead of adding more products. Avoid harsh scrubbing and introduce new skincare products gradually.Persistent irritation, painful acne or a rash should be assessed by a qualified dermatologist.

5. Give Your Lips and Hands Extra Attention

Lips and hands can become uncomfortable when the skin loses moisture. Keep a suitable lip balm handy and use a moisturising hand cream after washing your hands.

If your lips are frequently dry, avoid licking them, as this can make the dryness worse. Choose a gentle lip product that does not sting or irritate your skin.

6. Build a Simple Night-Time Routine

Taking care of your skin doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need a long, complicated routine to get great results. A simple routine, like one you do every evening, can be easy to stick to and make a big difference. To take care of your skin, start by getting rid of your makeup and washing your face gently. Then, use a moisturizer that's right for your skin type. If you're using special skincare products that a doctor prescribed, keep using them the way you were told to, even when the seasons change - don't switch things up on your own.Consistency is more important than constantly switching products in search of quick results.

7. Pay Attention to Sleep and Everyday Habits

Skincare is only one part of looking after yourself. Regular sleep, balanced meals, adequate fluid intake and stress management also contribute to overall well-being.

You can't just eat or drink something and wake up with perfect skin. It's about making healthy habits a part of your daily routine. And if you're dealing with skin issues that won't go away, it's probably a good idea to see a doctor or dermatologist for help. They can figure out what's going on and give you the right treatment.

Do You Really Need a Separate Winter Skincare Routine?

Not necessarily. Your routine should respond to how your skin feels, the local weather and the products that suit you.

In some areas, like North India, the weather can be cool and dry, so a richer moisturizer might feel better on your skin. But if you live somewhere warm and humid, a lighter moisturizer could still be a good choice.

The important thing is to avoid changing every product at once. Make small adjustments when needed and stop using anything that causes irritation.
