Money was deducted even though the UPI payment failed. Here's What You Need to Do.

Money was deducted even though the UPI payment failed. Here's What You Need to Do.

Imagine paying for groceries, booking a train ticket, or sending money to a friend through UPI. Your bank account shows that the money has been deducted, but the payment app displays “Failed” or "Pending." Losing money can be a real hassle, especially when you need it urgently. But if your UPI payment fails, it doesn't mean your money is lost forever. The problem might be a minor technical issue or a glitch with the receiving bank. It's possible that the transaction is just delayed, which can be a huge relief. You might need to wait for a while to see if the payment goes through later. It's not always a lost cause, and knowing this can be a big comfort when you're worried about getting your money back. Here is what you should do if money is deducted but your UPI payment does not go through.

1. Check the Transaction Status First

Before making another payment, open your UPI app and check the transaction history.

Your payment may show one of these statuses:

- Successful: The payment has been completed.

- Pending: The transactpppprocessed, ill being processed or confirmation has not arrived.

- Failed: The transaction did not complete successfully.

If you're waiting for a payment to go through, don't rush to send the money again right away. Instead, take a moment to check if the person you're sending it to has actually received it, and see if the status of your transaction has changed. This can help you avoid any confusion or unnecessary extra payments.

2. Will Your Deducted Money Be Refunded?

When things don't go as planned with a transactits way. usually finds its way back to your account. But here's the thing how long it takes to get your money back can vary a lot depending on what kind of transaction we're talking about. When you send money using UPI, but it doesn't reach the person you're sending it to, the Reserve Bank of India has a plan to fix this problem. If the money is taken from your account, but the other person doesn't get it, the bank that was supposed to receive the money should usually put it back in your account within a day, as long as the transfer can't be completed.

For a UPI merchant payment where your account is debited but the merchant does not receive confirmation, the prescribed auto-reversal timeline is up to T+5 days.

Here, T means the date of the transaction. These are regulatory timelines, not a guarantee that every refund will arrive immediately.

If your refund is late, you might be able to get some extra money. It depends on what kind of payment you made and what went wrong. There are rules to help with this, and the RBI has set them up to make sure things get sorted out. These rules are in place to protect people in situations like this, where they're still waiting for their money after the deadline has passed.

3. Raise a Complaint Through Your UPI App

If your money doesn't come back when you expect it to, don't keep trying to make the same payment over and over. Instead, go ahead and file a complaint to sort out the issue. This way, you can get help and avoid wasting more time.

Follow these steps:

1. Open the UPI app you used.

2. Go to your transaction history.

3. Select the failed or pending payment.

4. Choose the option that allows you to report a problem or start a dispute.

5. Select the issue that matches your problem and don't forget to save the reference number for your complaint.

When you're having trouble with a transaction, it's a good idea to get in touch with your bank's customer support team. To make things easier, have some key information ready - this includes the transaction ID, the date the transaction took place, the amount involved, and any reference number related to your issue. This way, you can get help quickly and efficiently.

4. What If the Recipient Says They Have Not Received the Money?

Ask the recipient to check their bank account statement rather than relying only on an app notification.

If a transaction is still pending, it's a good idea to hold off until it's been finalized. Once it's complete, you can check the status through your payment app or bank to get an update. However, if the transaction shows it's been processed, but the recipient hasn't received the funds, you should report the issue immediately. When you do, be sure to have all the transaction details handy, so you can provide accurate information. This way, the issue can be looked into and hopefully resolved quickly.

Don't just rely on a screenshot or a payment notification as proof that the money has actually landed in the recipient's bank account.

5. Avoid These Common Mistakes

When a UPI payment fails, remember these safety tips:

- Do not make repeated payments without checking the transaction status.

- Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or banking password with anyone claiming to help you get a refund.

- Do not install screen-sharing apps at the request of an unknown caller.

- Contact customer support only through the official app, bank website or verified contact details.

A genuine refund does not require you to reveal your UPI PIN.
