Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par to Release in Japan After 9 Years

Aamir Khan is all set to return to Japanese theatres after a gap of nine years. His latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par, will be released in Japan in spring 2027, giving the film another international theatrical market after its Indian release.

The announcement was made by Japanese distributor GEEK PICTURES, which confirmed that the film will be released under the Japanese title “Sitaare! The Miracle Team of Stardust.” The movie will open at Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho, YEBISU GARDEN CINEMA and other theatres across Japan..

Aamir Khan Returns to Japanese Cinemas

The Japan release is significant for Aamir Khan because it will be his first starring theatrical release in Japan in nine years.

His previous major starring film to receive a Japanese theatrical release was Dangal, which reached Japanese audiences in 2018. His production Secret Superstar was also released in Japan in 2019, but Sitaare Zameen Par marks his return as the lead actor to the country's theatrical market.

Aamir has developed a substantial international audience through films such as 3 Idiots, PK and Dangal, making his movies particularly familiar to audiences outside India..

What Is Sitaare Zameen Par About?

Sitaare Zameen Par is a human comedy directed by R. S. Prasanna, with Aamir Khan in the lead role.

Aamir plays Gulshan, a former basketball player who becomes an arrogant and struggling basketball coach. After being assigned community service, he is asked to coach a basketball team consisting of adults with disabilities.

The experience gradually changes his outlook on life as he develops a relationship with the players and begins to understand lessons that go beyond basketball.

The film combines comedy and emotional storytelling while exploring themes such as inclusion, diversity, acceptance and neurodiversity..

Ten First-Time Actors With Disabilities

One of the distinctive aspects of the film is its casting.

The members of Team Sitaare are played by 10 first-time actors who themselves have disabilities. According to the Japanese distributor, the actors were selected through an extensive audition process.

This casting approach is central to the film's presentation of its basketball team and its themes of inclusion.

Rather than treating the characters simply as supporting figures around the protagonist, the film gives the team an important role in Gulshan's transformation..

Is It a Sequel to Taare Zameen Par?

Despite the similar-sounding titles, Sitaare Zameen Par is not a direct sequel to Taare Zameen Par.

The makers describe it as a spiritual successor to Aamir Khan's 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. The two films are connected more through their themes than through a continuing storyline.

Interestingly, “Sitaare” means “stars” in Hindi and is the plural form of “sitara.” The Japanese distributor has also highlighted the connection between the title and Aamir's earlier film..

Official Remake of a Spanish Film

Sitaare Zameen Par is also an official remake of the Spanish film Champions, which was released in 2018.

The original Spanish movie followed a basketball coach who was required to train a team of players with intellectual disabilities. The Indian adaptation moves the story into an Indian setting while retaining the central idea of personal transformation through sport and relationships.

The film therefore combines an international story with Aamir Khan's familiar style of emotional and socially relevant cinema..

Who Stars in the Film?

Along with Aamir Khan, the film features Genelia Deshmukh, Gurpal Singh, Dolly Ahluwalia and Brijendra Kala in important roles.

The film is directed by R. S. Prasanna, while Aamir Khan is also credited as a producer.
