Are you considering a trip to Hampta Pass and Chandratal? Let’s get down to business proper planning is essential. Hampta Pass is not an easy trek; it is a challenging, high-altitude route that requires significant preparation. Typically, trekkers reach Chhatru first and then travel by road to Chandratal. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. Here is a practical plan to help you make the most of your one-week trip, including other fantastic spots along the way that you can explore.

The Best Time to Visit Hampta Pass and Chandratal

If you are planning a trek, the period from June to September is considered the best time. However, be sure to check the weather and road conditions before you set off. Heavy rainfall can sometimes occur in July and August, particularly in the Kullu region. September is generally a better time to visit, as the skies are usually clear. Before you set off, be sure to check with the locals so you know what to expect ahead.

7-Day itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Manali

Take an overnight bus from Delhi to Manali, or travel by your own vehicle. Spend the day resting and ensure you have all the necessary gear for the trek. You will also need to arrange transport to Jobra, the starting point of your adventure.

Avoid heading straight onto a high-altitude trek immediately after a long journey.

Day 2: Manali to Jobra and Chika

Travel to Jobra and begin your trek toward Chika, a popular spot for setting up camp. You will emerge from the tree line into an open area with mountain views. The landscape here is spectacular, as dense forests give way to rugged mountains.

Day 3: Chika to Balu Ka Ghera

Head toward Balu Ka Ghera, a campsite nestled amidst the mountains with plenty of open space. The trail can be challenging, involving uneven terrain and the potential need to cross small streams—depending on the conditions at the time.

Be sure to carry waterproof or appropriate trekking footwear, warm clothing, and a rain jacket.

Day 4: Crossing Hampta Pass to Shea Goru

For many trekkers, this is the most challenging day. The trail ascends toward Hampta Pass—situated at an altitude of approximately 14,000 feet—before descending toward Shea Goru. This part of the journey can be challenging due to snow, strong winds, and unpredictable weather. It is best to travel with a reliable trekking company and an experienced guide who is well-acquainted with these routes. They can assist you in navigating any difficulties, ensuring your journey remains both safe and enjoyable.

Day 5: Reaching Chatru and Visiting Chandratal

Head down towards Chatru; if the road is open and the weather permits, continue onwards to Chandratal. Situated at an altitude of approximately 14,000 feet, this lake is highly popular, renowned for its crystal-clear water and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Upon arrival, it is only a short walk from the parking area to the lake. If you intend to camp, please ensure you do so only in designated areas, located at a distance from the lake. Be sure to follow local regulations and carry all your waste back with you when you depart.

Day 6: Return to Manali

Depending on road conditions, make your way back to Manali via the Atal Tunnel (on the Lahaul side). Keep your itinerary flexible for this day, as poor road conditions, water crossings, or adverse weather could lead to delays.

Day 7: Explore Manali or Depart for Home

If you have some extra time before heading home, consider visiting Old Manali, the Hadimba Devi Temple, or Solang Valley—all of which are excellent spots. Since these locations are distinct from one another, choose one that best fits your travel plans.

So, you are planning a trip to Manali—that’s fantastic! To make the most of your seven-day journey, keep an eye on your arrival time in Manali. If your trip begins and ends in Delhi, keep in mind that the journey could be long and subject to delays; therefore, do not expect everything to go exactly according to plan. It is best to remain flexible and allow for some extra time.

What to pack

Bring along trekking shoes with good grip, a waterproof jacket, thermal clothing, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, your essential medications, water, and snacks. Also, download offline maps, as mobile network connectivity may be limited in remote areas.
